A strong EU Single Market depends on consistency.
Recent Single Market KPI trends point to growing barriers: Weaker integration, increasing conformity challenges and slower standard‑setting. These developments are not abstract indicators - they directly affect competitiveness, legal certainty and cross‑border trade. These points were presented by CECIP’s Secretary General, Samuel Schmidt, at the 7th WELMEC e.V. Committee Meeting in Brno (Czech Republic). In legal metrology, fragmentation often results from divergent national interpretations, gold‑plating and procedural differences. A revision of the MID and NAWID can strengthen the Single Market by improving legal clarity, consistency of enforcement and harmonisation. While consumer protection remains essential, non‑functional barriers undermine the objective of harmonised EU legislation. Stronger legal clarity and harmonization make the Single Market work as intended: One set of rules, applied consistently, enabling innovation, trust and a genuine level playing field across the EU.
